Wicked Game (Finnish Release)

Remarks:

This is the very first official video of HIM, often called finnish version. You can see the old formation of the band with Ville Valo (Vocals), Mige Amour (Bass), Lily Lazer (Guitar) and Juhana "Pätkä" Rantala (Drums). You won't find the former keyboarder Antto Einari Melasniemi acting in this video as he is the director and doing his job behind the camera. On some HIM fanpages, the director is credited to be Kaisaniemi Smal, but I don't know what's the story behind this. The location of the video is Kaivopuisto, a nice park in Helsinki town. The dog, which you can see sometimes, belonged to Ville's parents.
As far as I know you won't find this clip on any officially released HIM media.

Wicked Game (German Release)

Remarks:

With PR-machine starting to roll in Germany, HIM decided to do a second Wicked Game video - shot and released (almost complete at least) on a kinda Promo-Multimedia-CD in Germany and also called german version. Alike to the first, finnish version of Wicked Game, you won't find keyboarder Antto Einari Melasniemi in this video, although the director is now german Markus (Yes, Markus with a "k", not Marcus with a "c") Walter. Some say, he appears for some seconds in one scene. The story of the clip is taking place throughout all four seasons of the year.
The video is also released on Love Metal Archives Vol. 1 DVD.

When Love and death embrace

Remarks:

Existing in two different versions, the original edit comes with some more hotel scenes and has a longer intro than the other, almost 50 seconds shorter, radio edit version.
It has been released on Love Metal Archives Vol. 1 DVD.

Name:

Join Me

Release date:

1999

Director:

Robert Wilde

Location:

Studio in Berlin, Germany

Screenshot:

Join me in death

Remarks:

There are three video versions of Join Me around: Two with scenes from the less successful Roland Emmerich film "The 13th Floor" and one german version with laser show only. In every video you see Ville Valo as an androgenic and very female looking young man with a lot of make up and wearing a silver shirt, a fur coat or acting topless. Only sometimes you see the other band members in the background. You can also see an unknown, blonde and naked female, but just very unreal.
One version with scenes from 13th floor can be found on 13th floor DVD. The german version (most of it at least) is published on the very same Promo-Multimedia-CD containing the german version of Wicked Game.

Release date:

Director:

Pasi Pauni

Location:

Studio in Helsinki, Finland.

Right here in my arms

Remarks:

The video of the second hit single from Razorblade Romance was shot in a studio in finnish Helsinki. No more glamour but straight rock style is the message of the song as well as of the video. The girl staring in the clip is 16-year-old finnish model Ninja Sarasalo. Some say, that there are two versions of this video differing in e.g. guitar intro and some other scenes.
The video is published on the single of Solitary Man Vol. I (UK only), Love Metal Archives Vol. 1 DVD and HIM - Video Collection: 1997-2003 DVD (USA only). Again, it can be found almost complete on famous german Promo-Multimedia-CD.

Name:

Poison girl

Release date:

2000

Director:

Paul Hauptmann

Location:

Arena in Berlin, Germany

Screenshot:

Poison Girl

Remarks:

The video of Poison Girl is some kinda low budget production, simply using different camera angles of the concert in Berlin on March 29th 2000, in bootleg circles known as Overdrive 2000 and some other shows of the Razoblade Romance Tour 2000. No story, but pure live experience with HIM acting in front of a well tempered audience.
Can be found on, yes, german Promo-Multimedia-CD and full version on US HIM - Video Collection: 1997-2003 DVD as well as on Love Metal Archives Vol. 1 DVD.

Name:

Gone with the sin

Release date:

2000

Director:

Ercin Filizli

Location:

South England, UK

Screenshot:

Gone with the sin

Remarks:

Gone With The Sin comes in two different versions: A finnish and a german one. The german one uses a natural color balance and many scenes are projected on naked bodies of three women and one man. The finnish version uses a bright and flamboyant color balance, making the whole scene more surrealistic. The projections on naked bodies are left out.
It's the first video staring Ville Valo only - no sign of any band member elsewhere in the video. Pretty funny and in contrast of the melancholy mood of the song is that Ville Valo is laying down some flowers at a grave, whose tombstone says "Jack Daniels".
The video is published on (again) german Promo-Multimedia- CD and Love Metal Archives Vol. 1 DVD.

Name:

Join Me

Release date:

2000

Director:

Bill Yükich

Location:

Studio in London, UK

Screenshot:

Join me in death

Remarks:

For the release of the single Join Me and the album Razorblade Romance in the UK, HIM decided to fuel their popularity by making a new video of Join Me called ice or european version. Shot in a studio in London, Ville appears as feminine and with a similiar outfit like in the german version. As well the clip is not that gloomy compared to the german version and the other band members can be seen more often.
The video is published on the single of The Funeral Of Hearts Vol. I, which is released in UK only, on the HER Promo single Join Me In Death, on the HIM - Video Collection: 1997-2003 DVD, which is released in USA only and on pan european Love Metal Archives Vol. 1 DVD. You could also find the almost complete clip on the oftentimes mentioned german Promo-Multimedia-CD.

Name:

Wicked game

Release date:

2000

Director:

Bill Yükich

Location:

On The Rocks, London, UK

Screenshot:

Wicked Game

Remarks:

Gaining a foothold in the UK, HIM decided to make a new video of Wicked Game (again). This time the location is a pretty run-down looking striptease club called "On The Rocks" in London, UK. A female stripper is doing her job and marks the difference of the two versions of this video. The clean version is well censored, while the rude or hard cut version shows all a female stripper has to show in her job.
The clean version is published on UK only single-CD Buried Alive By Love Vol I.

Name:

Pretending

Release date:

2001

Director:

Kevin Godley

Location:

Saint Elaia's Finest, London WC1, UK

Screenshot:

Pretending

Remarks:

Another video shot in UK. Main gimmick of this clip is that the background of the scene could be rocking through frame whilst the artist stays relative to the camera and vice-versa. Therefore HIM band members had to be attached to a rolling stage rig as well as a camera in front of them. For details see this page.
The video can be found on various editions of Deep Shadows And Brilliant Highlights (CD, Digipack, Christmas Edition), Love Metal Archives Vol. 1 DVD as well as on HIM - Video Collection: 1997-2003 DVD.

Name:

In joy and sorrow

Release date:

2001

Director:

John Hillcoat

Location:

London, UK

Screenshot:

In Joy And Sorrow

Remarks:

Shot in UK, some say even in the same studios like Pretending. No hightech this time, but a more sentimental and silent video appropriate to the song. Female actress is Nicolette Groeler, a south-african model.
The video was released on Deep Shadows And Brilliant Highlights Christmas Edition, In Joy And Sorrow Digipack, The Sacrament Vol II, Love Metal Archives Vol. 1 DVD and on HIM - Video Collection: 1997-2003 DVD.

Remarks:

As there was no time to come together in a studio for shooting a video, HIM decided to make a clip out of live footages from various concerts of the Deep Shadows And Brilliant Highlights tour.
The video was released on Heartache Every Moment Digipack, Heartache Every Moment & Close To The Flame Digipack, Love Metal Archives Vol. 1 DVD and on HIM - Video Collection: 1997-2003 DVD.

Remarks:

Same story like of the video of Heartache Every Moment: No time, no special video, just a live footage from the 2001 tour.
The video is released on Heartache Every Moment Digipack, Heartache Every Moment & Close To The Flame Digipack and on Love Metal Archives Vol. 1 DVD.

The Funeral Of Hearts

Remarks:

The first video of the album Love Metal. Stefan Lindfors, a director born on Aaland Islands, an archipelago between Finland and Sweden, shot the clip on various locations in northern scandinavia. Some scenes were shot on the arctic ocean in Norway, some other scenes nearby finnish towns Kilpisjärvi, Hyvinkää and Porkkala. Temperatures have been 20°C below zero and sometimes even colder.
The video is released on some editions of Love Metal, The Funeral Of Hearts Digipack, The Funeral Of Hearts Vol I, Promo-CD The Funeral Of Hearts, Promo-Video The Funeral Of Hearts, Love Metal Archives Vol. 1 DVD and HIM - Video Collection: 1997-2003 DVD.

Name:

Buried alive by Love

Release date:

2003

Director:

Bam Margera

Location:

L.A. Theatre, Los Angeles, CA, USA

Screenshot:

Buried Alive By Love

Remarks:

This is the first video with Bam Margera as director, trying to push HIM to prominence in USA. Little story about Juliette Lewis, quite well known actress and female star of this clip: Her husband Stephen Berra is a skateboard pro just like Bam Margera. Bam asked Stephen to ask Juliette to act in this video and when she heard HIM's music, she liked it and agreed. The video comes in an international version and a surgical mix, where all smoking scenes were substituted or cut out.
The surgical mix can be found on a promo videotape of Buried Alive By Love. The international version is released on HIM album Love Metal, Buried Alive By Love Digipack, Love Metal Archives Vol. 1 DVD and HIM - Video Collection: 1997-2003 DVD.

Name:

Release date:

2004

Director:

Bam Margera

Location:

Ploskovice Castle, near Litomerice, Czech Republik

Screenshot:

The Sacrament

Remarks:

Again a video with director Bam Margera. The clip lives from the ancient surrounding and atmosphere of the castle as well as of its interiors. Nice side story of the videoshot is about czech model Vanda Vosatkova. When hiring her for the video, it wasn't known, that she couldn't speak english. While being on the set, she needed a translator to get the instructions right.
The international version was released on UK-only The Sacrament Vol I, The Sacrament Digipack, Promo-single Buried Alive By Love Vol I, Promo-single The Sacrament, Love Metal Archives Vol. 1 DVD and HIM - Video Collection: 1997-2003 DVD. There is also a more than 30 seconds longer promo version of the video, which can be found on a UK-promo videotape of The Sacrament.

Screenshot:

Solitary Man

Remarks:

Bam Margera - Part III. Shot in Los Angeles during some promotional work of HIM in USA, the video is not that spectacular or costly produced like Buried Alive By Love or The Sacrament. Interesting note is, that one of the girls appearing in the video, is Bam Margera's spouse Jennifer Rivell.
The international version was released on UK-only Solitary Man Vol I, Love Metal Archives Vol. 1 DVD and HIM - Video Collection: 1997-2003 DVD. There is also a 20 seconds longer promo version of the video, which can be found on a UK-promo videotape of Solitary Man.

2004

Bam Margera

Fonthill Castle, Doylestown, PA, USA

And Love Said No

Remarks:

Quite comparable to the german Wicked Game video, the scenes are dark and atrabilious, taking place inside and outside an old castle. Although US-actress Rose McRowan was supposed to take part in the video, no women appear, as McRowan had to call off short dated.
The video has been published on Love Metal Archives Vol. 1 DVD only so far.
